Is Anything Missing From Your Windows 8?

Monday, November 19th, 2012

As some of you may have discovered, Windows 8 Pro does not include software for playing movies via DVD or Blu Ray. Also MIA is the ability to watch and record live TV.

Microsoft said that Windows Media Center was removed because there didn’t seem to be many users who were taking advantage of it. However, the Home Theater PC tribe has spoken and now Microsoft is providing it free of charge to some users.

For a limited time, Microsoft is allowing a free download and install of Windows 8 Media Center Pack and that is valued at $70!

Go to this page:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs

Then enter your email address and they will send you a key to install it.  The site claims that your product key will be emailed to you within 24 hours. Once you have your key, instructions to install the software are on the site where you enter your email address.

This offer ends in January, so please act quickly to take advantage of this free software. Even if you do not have Windows 8 or plan on upgrading to it in the immediate future, you should still get yourself a key while you can. You will receive one key per email address.

Please call us you have have questions about Windows 8 or need assistance with installation and training.

Cloud Services Can Keep Your Data Safe

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

Why should you move your critical information into the cloud? If the cloud is an area you are unfamiliar with, check out this blog on cloud basics. Keeping your data on site and not properly secured can lead to infiltration and a loss of critical information; an unfortunate event like that can close your doors forever. Data disaster prevention is key and Cloud Services could be the solution.

A few statistics may persuade you to go virtual:

*20% of small to medium businesses will suffer a major disaster causing loss of critical data every 5 years. (Source: Richmond House Group)

*93% of companies that lost their data for 10 days or more filed for bankruptcy within one year of that loss. (Source: National Archives & Records Administration in Washington)

*50% of companies that lost their data for 10 days or more filed for bankruptcy immediately. (Source: National Archives & Records Administration in Washington)

*33% of all data loss disasters are caused by human error. (Source: Protect-data.com)

*40% of small to medium businesses that manage their own network will have their network accessed by a hacker and more than 50% won’t even know they were attacked. (Source: Gartner Group)

Allowing an experienced Cloud Services provider to manage your critical data will ensure that prohibited data is blocked and the remainder stays secure. additionally, Cloud Storage Gateways provide a real-time backup version of your information without a costly physical infrastructure.

Teltek is happy to help manage your data and keep it secure. Some of the Cloud Services we offer are:

*Email/Microsoft Hosted Exchange

*Virtual Desktops

*Virtual and Dedicated Servers

*MSP Services/Help Desk

*Disaster Recovery

Call Teltek today for more information on the Cloud Services we recommend and can provide to your business.

Ask The Teltek Tekspert – How Do I Protect My Technology From Stormy Weather?

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012

George in Westminster, MD asks:

“The severe weather and power outages this past weekend has me concerned. What steps can I take to prevent my phones and electronic equipment from being damaged or knocked offline?”

Teltek’s service department is well aware of the chaos that can result from severe weather conditions. Electronics do not function well when exposed to the elements or if there is an interruption of service.

Here are is a list of Ten Tips to follow:

1. Have your electronic equipment plugged into a battery back up unit (UPS) or a surge protector. You can also install a lightning arrester at your main circuit panel

2. If you are in a high risk area of lighting you should consider installing a Central Office (CO) surge protector. This protects the incoming phone lines from passing a surge through to your telephone system if struck

3. Keep electronic devices off the floor and installed in a data rack

4. In the event of ice or heavy snow, make sure it is not permitted to accumulate on your roof since that could cause a collapse and/or intrusion

5. Avoid placing any electronics in locations where water pipes, faucets and hot water heaters are within close proximity

6. Watch for any tree branches that hang over power lines and roofs; getting these trimmed back can prevent them from falling and causing damage or tearing down lines

7. Check the gutters on your building and make sure that they are free from debris and that water can flow freely away from your building

8. The room where your equipment is stored should be cool, dry and well-ventilated. It is ideal for your network room to have its own independent air conditioning system

9. Your phone system should be grounded. if you’re not sure if it is, give Teltek a call! We can send a technician out to make sure your phone system is appropriately installed and grounded

10. Consider installing an uninterruptible power supply for temporary backup power for your electronic equipment

A final tip courtesy of Baltimore Gas & Electric: During a power outage, turn off all appliances, including your furnace, air conditioner and water heater to avoid overloading circuits when power is restored to all appliances at once. Leave one lamp on so you will know when your service is restored.

Despite all of this preparation, accidents may still occur. If they do, Teltek is here to help you get back on track! We can assist with everything from restoring phone service to data recovery.

Since 1997, Teltek has become an established resource for nearly 2,000 client’s telephone systems, voice and data cable installations, and carrier services. Password Protection Pointers

Thursday, June 14th, 2012

What’s the password? The key to unlocking all types of information lies with the password, that crazy combination of letters, symbols and numbers that keeps your data secure. That same string of characters can cause devastation if found in the wrong hands. A prime example of this was demonstrated last week when news broke that 6.5 million LinkedIn passwords had been posted to a Russian hacking forum along with a request to help decrypt them. Linkedin users were prompted to change their passwords immediately.

There’s a lot of information out there with suggestions on how to design these codes and maintain password protection. The teksperts here at Teltek would like to share with you a concise list of the 10 best tips we recommend for creating a password and preventing it from being compromised.

1. Use a separate and unique password for each site

2. When creating a password, include upper case letters, lower case letters, numbers and symbols

3. The length of a password should be 9 characters or more

4. Avoid using personal information like birthdates and pet names, be wary of how much information you post on Social Media sites

5. Change passwords often. Set an automatic reminder for yourself to revise them about every three months

6. Use a password generator to create one

7. Use a password checker to determine the strength of a password you create yourself

8. Create a password by spelling out a random sentence with no spaces (example: Ioncelivedat123MainStreet.)

9. Never give your password to others or write it down

10. Utilize password storage devices. These are small USB keys that you can use as a password manager

I Spy: How To Protect Yourself From Spyware

Wednesday, February 29th, 2012

Spyware is malicious software that is designed to perform certain functions when it reaches your computer. It does this without your permission and the chaos it unleashes includes pilfering sensitive information, barraging you with pop-up windows and possibly crashing your computer. It’s called Spyware because it can be installed without the user’s knowledge and quietly collects information. Detecting and removing spyware can be a real challenge.

Since Teltek IT specializes in Spyware and Antivirus protection and elimination, we wanted to share some tips on preventing spyware from taking hold and what to do in the event of a spyware invasion.

The best ways to protect yourself from spyware are to make sure you have a reliable firewall installed, keep your software updated and only download content from sites you know are safe. If you use Internet Explorer for browsing, you can adjust the security settings to limit how much information will be accepted from a site. Finally and most importantly, make sure you install antispyware protection.

Barracuda, Norton, McAfee and other companies offer solutions for blocking spyware and many of these products feature automatic data backups, parental controls and identity protection. There is even social networking security for Twitter, Facebook and other programs that allow you to socialize safely.

So what action should you take if you are compromised by Spyware? Call Teltek! Removing spyware can be tricky, so let our IT experts scrub your system clean of that malicious malware and send those spies back to their evil secret headquarters.

As a Microsoft Certified Partner and Dell Registered Partner, Teltek has the knowledge and resources to keep your computer network and IT infrastructure current and functioning efficiently with the personalized service Teltek clients have grown to admire. With office locations in Baltimore and Westminster, Maryland, we serve clients across MD, DC and VA.

Product Review: iTwin

Tuesday, February 21st, 2012

iTwin has introduced a device by the same name that allows users to share data over the internet without a dedicated web storage service or remote access software.

It’s called the iTwin because this handy tool consists of a pair of two USB keys that plug into each other and then can be separated for file sharing.

This award-winning $99.00 gadget can connect any two online computers anywhere in the world. Unlike a flash drive, there is no storage limit, so the only limiting factors are the sizes of the hard drives of the computers sharing the information and the internet connection speeds.

Using iTwin is effortless; plug it in to your computer as if it was a flash drive. A window will pop up and you drag and drop the files you wish to share into this window. Leave your computer with one half of iTwin connected to it and remove the other half (also make sure you stay logged in to that computer). When you are ready to share your files, simply plug the half you are carrying into any online Windows computer and your files are accessible!

If you lose either half, the iTwin can be remotely disabled so your information stays confidential. No data is stored on the device, it’s all on the computer. The two halves provide a secure AES 256-bit encrypted connection, allowing users to safely access their data. iTwin explains it as being two ends of a cable without the cable, just the connectors.

For more information on iTwin or other file-sharing devices, contact Teltek today!
