Ask The Teltek Tekspert – How Can I Protect Myself From Cellphone And Tablet Theft?

Thursday, May 16th, 2013

Question

Carrie in Baltimore, MD asks:

I’ve seen a lot of disturbing stories in the news about the increase of cell phone theft on buses and in other public places. How do I keep from becoming a victim myself?

Theft of cellphones and other portable electronic devices is on the rise and in some cases, violence is involved. Some victims are being physically assaulted and seriously injured, others may be threatened with guns or knives. It was reported that there were 579 thefts of cellphones or tablets in San Francisco from November to April of this year.

Here are a few tips to decrease your chances of being a target or to minimize the damage if it actually happens to you:

1. Unless you are home, keep your phone out of sight with the ringer turned off, this includes the office and your car. If it’s not seen or heard, it’s less tempting to take and harder to get. Criminals like easy targets

2. Pay attention: Many victims report that they were engrossed in reading an email or in a verbal conversation when they were attacked. People who are distracted are specifically targeted since that gives the bad guy the advantage of surprise

3. Keep your device locked with a password or PIN. If someone does get ahold of it, this could prevent them from accessing your personal information or at least buy you some time to recover your device

4. Download and install software that can remotely track or wipe your phone, Apple has the Find My iPhone feature

5. Use an ultra violet pen to print your street address and an alternate contact number onto both your mobile handset and battery. This makes your device easily identifiable as your property if it’s recovered. The ink will wear off after a few months, but you can redo it at that time

If you find yourself in a bad situation:

6. Give it up: hand your device over if someone demands it. It’s not worth risking your safety

7. Notify the police and your carrier immediately in the event of loss or theft

8. Request an immediate, formal investigation from your carrier and file a police report

9. If you do have a track or wipe app installed, activate it as soon as you can. The device needs to be turned on in order for the track or wipe to work and If the thief powers the device off, you may be out of luck

10. In addition to reporting your phone lost or stolen, you should also disable your phone number (not account number) so that no further charges can be made to your number

Microsoft recently announced that its cloud service product, SkyDrive now has over 250 million users. For those of you not taking advantage of SkyDrive, here is what you’re missing out on.

SkyDrive is a tool for hosting documents, photos and more and it allows you to sync your files across multiple devices. You can share the documents you choose and set the rest to remain private. SkyDrive is free if you sign up for 7GB of storage; more space is available for a fee.

The product, which has been around for over five years, has become very popular in the last few months following the debut of Windows 8 in October of 2012. A short while after that, Microsoft made SkyDrive the default save location for the new Office, updated the SkyDrive app for iOS, and improved its uploading performance. Other upgrades include two-step verification and Extended Validation Certificates. Outlook.com just announced that they are offering a new feature that allows you to insert SkyDrive files directly into an email message.

Use Technology To Make Your Workplace Safer

Tuesday, April 23rd, 2013

security camera

After watching the events of the Boston Marathon bombing unfold, we all have a new appreciation for technology and the role it plays in the war against terrorism and violence in general. The perpetrators were identified and tracked using video surveillance and other measures.

These high tech tools are not just for police departments and the FBI, there are many electronic devices that can be incorporated into your office to keep your employees and equipment secure.

Most of the articles we post deal with information security and cover subjects like creating strong passwords and protecting your PCs from viruses, but Teltek cares about our employees and yours, so here are a few measures you can take to keep your people and property safe.

Video Cameras: these can be mounted within your workspace and outside the building as well to monitor your server room, lobby, parking lots, alleys and your front door.

Door Phones: a door phone mounted outside your front or back door allows your customers and delivery people to call from the front door to be allowed access and prevents unwanted visitors from entering.

Paging Systems: More than just a broadcaster of elevator music, paging systems can alert everyone at once if there is an important message to deliver, like evacuation instructions.

Security Systems: It’s a good idea to have a security system in place and some of them, such as proxy card systems, can also be used to monitor when employees enter and exit the building.

As your one source technology solution, Teltek is happy to assist you with the implementation of these devices into your workplace. Call us today for a free site survey to evaluate your security measures.

Ask The Teltek Tekspert – How Do I Prevent My WordPress Site From Being Hacked?

Thursday, April 18th, 2013

Question

Regina in Rockville, MD asks:

I saw in the news that 90,000 servers were hijacked to attack thousands of WordPress sites earlier this week. My daily blog is done in WordPress and I’m worried that my site will be targeted next. What measures can I take to protect my site?

Diana, I agree with your concern, that level of hacking is a warning to all of us and some are saying the attack last week could be the start of an even bigger assault.

What happened in this situation is that hackers searched through WordPress accounts and attempted to access them by logging in with the username “admin” and 1000 of the most common passwords, a practice known as “brute force”. Since many people use “admin” and very weak passwords such as “password”,12345” and other obvious ones to access their WordPress sites, it wasn’t a very difficult task for these criminals to break into so many sites.

After a user’s system is compromised through an accessed WordPress site, the system  is incorporated into a botnet, which is a collection of Internet computers that are instructed by their controller to forward transmissions (including spam or viruses) to other computers on the Internet. The botnet spreads the attack even wider and the results can be catastrophic.

To protect your WordPress site against this kind of attack, here are a few steps you should take:

1. Create a unique and complex password, you can find some advice on that subject in our Password Protection Pointers blog

2. If you never changed ‘admin’ as the username to access your blog, change that immediately. Like your password, your username should also be unique and complex.

3. Make sure your WordPress software is updated and that you are running the most current version.

4. Activate  two-step authentication on WordPress. Two Step Authentication is a feature WordPress recently introduced and it works like this: when you log in to your WordPress.com account, you will be prompted to enter a secret number. To get this number, you download the Google Authenticator App on your smartphone. It generates a new number every 30 seconds. Open the app on your phone, type in the number it’s showing and you are authenticated.

5. Use Plugins. If you have WordPress blog plugins, keep those updated and there is a security plugin you can install called Better WP Security

6. Limit access to the admin section of your WordPress site. Hacking does not just happen outside of your company and admin access should be given to a limited number of trusted and careful employees.

7. Make sure the computers you use are free of spyware, malware, and virus infections.

8. Be aware of network vulnerabilities. Keep your firewall updated and secure and reconsider accessing your WordPress account via wifi from an internet café or other public place, where you could be using a network that is not properly secured.

If you feel any part of your technology is vulnerable to hacking, call Teltek IT today! As a full service supporter of business software and hardware, we are fully qualified to evaluate your systems and suggest improvements and upgrades if needed.

Spamhaus Cyber Attack Slows Computers Across Europe

Tuesday, April 2nd, 2013

Last week, an epic cyber attack on a spam-blocking company slowed global internet services and the effects could be ongoing, according to experts.

Spamhaus, a London and Geneva-based non-profit group which publishes blacklists to help its customers identify known spammers, announced that it had been hit by ”distributed denial of service” (DDoS) attacks for more than a week. Until recently, this company was successfully blocking as much as 80% of spam messages for its clientele.

A DDoS attack is launched by attackers taking control of several (in this case, about 1000) computers and harnessing the power of those machines to generate as much as 300 gigabits/second of traffic to the targeted site to flood that site’s servers. The attackers sent commands to the computers under their control to request information as Spamhaus from open resolver internet servers. The resolvers responded with much bigger messages (100 times larger) than the initial request. Spamhaus, overwhelmed by the amount of traffic, was unable to respond to legitimate requests.

To defend against the attack, Spamhaus hired CloudFlare, who provided servers to filter out attack messages and allow legitimate requests to access Spamhaus. When the hackers failed to shut down their original target, they escalated to an attack on CloudFlare, then went after CloudFlare’s bandwidth providers. Internet service throughout Europe was slowed according to users.

It is suspected that Sven Olaf Kamphuis could be the mastermind behind the attack. Mr. Kamphuis, a self proclaimed Internet freedom fighter, considers Spamhaus to be a nemesis of his since the company has a few of his businesses on their spam offenders blacklist. He has publically accused Spamhaus of censorship.

Spamhaus has responded to the incident by publishing FAQ on their site about their experience and they even go as far as to recommend how to prevent something like this from happening to your company. According to their site, it is possible to avoid these types of attacks by ensuring that you do not allow traffic to leave your network if it has forged sending addresses and by verifying that DNS resolvers are secure.

If you feel your network may be susceptible to an attack or would like an evaluation of your system, call Teltek IT today!

Wider In-Flight Electronic Device Usage Being Reviewed

Tuesday, March 26th, 2013

airplane laptopPocket knives are not the only items that may be enjoying a little more freedom on planes soon. A working group commissioned by the FAA is now reviewing the ban on the use of electronic devices during takeoff and landing and a relaxing of these rules could happen as early as late 2013.

While the policy prohibiting cell phone usage is not being reconsidered, tablets, laptops and similar gadgets may soon have more flexibility to be actively used during all stages of flight.

The current policy prohibits the use of all electronics when airplanes are below 10,000 feet.

Rumor has it that the FAA is being pressured to either allow reading devices on planes or provide sound scientific evidence as to how these devices adversely affect flight electronics. This stance has been exacerbated by a type of double standard since the agency now allows iPads as flight manuals in the cockpit and some flight attendants have been provided with tablets to access information on flight procedures.

Many electronic devices are equipped with an “airplane mode” which allows a device to operate while suspending its signal transmitting functions, but that term and mode is not universal for all devices, so the group is working to develop a standard to apply across the board. Additionally, they are trying to account for the capabilities future devices may have and that will take time as well. The group plans to announce its findings this summer.

We will keep you advised of further developments in this story. In the meantime, call Teltek IT if you’d like more information on how to incorporate portable devices into your workplace or if your office is in need of IT support.

Microsoft Offers A Peek At How Technology Will Touch Offices

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

Microsoft is a true pioneer when it comes to developing new technologies and implementing them. To showcase what they have created and how those creations will be be incorporated into our everyday lives, Microsoft built a futuristic full-scale model home in a building on its Redwood, Washington headquarters campus. Visitors are encouraged to explore this home to see the technological possibilities at work in a domestic environment.

Last week, Microsoft held an annual event for the press inside its home of the future which was remodeled to represent a future workplace environment. One type of technology that prevailed was a massive touchscreen, described as a hybrid of an iPad and a television set. These screens are based on designs by Perceptive Pixel, a company acquired by Microsoft last year. Perceptive Pixel’s screens, used for the electoral vote maps, were seen on national news during the election. The first large touchscreens that Microsoft sold were the Surface 1 and Surface 2, marketed as table-top touchscreens.

Touchscreens are becoming more prevalent in society and Teltek’s baltimore office has a less sophisticated version of this technology in the lobby of the Emerging Technology Center, courtesty of NV3, another ETC resident. When you enter the third floor of the Can Company, there is a receptionist at the front desk, but if she is unavailable, there is an electronic map of the office layout. You can touch the name of the business on the map and a pop up window provides details on that company.

The touchscreen map at the Emerging Technology Center

Microsoft believes touchscreen technology will become even more prevalent in future offices as tools to promote productivity and collaboration. Their vision is for these displays to replace whiteboards and transform the way presentations are delivered.

These large screens, which are available in sizes of 55 or 82 inches, also permit for more interactive video conferencing as well. The methods by which you interact with Windows 8, including swiping, sliding, typing and using the live tiles are said to be much easier on this larger scale because you can do this with your hand instead of your finger.

At this time, the screens are being widely tested and utilized within Microsoft’s own offices. In addition to testing, Microsoft is also working to bring down the cost of owning one of these displays, which is currently priced at $7,000.00 for the 55 inch model.

Is your office as futuristic as possible? Does it have everything in place to make your workplace efficient and up to date? If not, Teltek can help you integrate a few of the features seen in Microsoft’s version of the future workplace, including videoconferencing and touch screen technology. Give us a call today to explore the possibilities!

Ask The Teltek Tekspert – Need For Speed

Thursday, February 21st, 2013

Question

Barbara from Harrisbug, PA asks:

My PC is running much slower than usual. Is there something wrong? How do I get the processing speed back?

A slow computer can signal a number of problems. Here are a few steps to get the Mach back in your machine:

Diagnose the Problem: Run a diagnostic tool such as Soluto, Hiren’s BootCD or SIW. These tools will identify the source of your slowness so you can take action. Google is also a great resource for this. Type in your issue and see what Google finds!

Check for Viruses: Typically, a virus is not the problem, but if you don’t have antivirus software running already, you can download Microsoft Security Essentials software for no charge. Something you want to consider though, antivirus software may be the cause of your computer’s lethargy, so make sure the antivirus software you are running is fast.

Ensure all Software is Updated: Software updates include fixes and improvements. If you fall behind on updates, your programs may not be running as effectively as possible.

Delete Your Cookies: Web cookies are small text files that are stored on your computer’s browser directory or program data subfolders and allow your browser and websites to track your browsing sessions and save certain useful information, such as account names and passwords, for later retrieval. Getting rid of cookies can save space and increase speed. Go to Google and search for how to do this based on your operating system.

Reduce Web Page History: Internet Explorer stores an archive of all Web sites you have visited. If it gets too big, the browser will be slowed. Microsoft recommends keeping no more than a week’s worth of Web history.

Disable Unused Applications or Add-Ons: To disable add-ons, go to the Internet Explorer option Tools -> Manage Add-ons. Other browsers have similar configuration controls. Please see our previous blog on bloatware and how to get rid of it.

Defragment your Computer: You can find the tool in your Control Panel. Run it monthly for optimum speed.

Free up some Space: A disk that’s running out of space can slow Windows significantly. Run the Disk Cleanup tool to remove Internet cache files, clear the Recycling Bin and delete unused programs. You should also delete emails, photos and videos you no longer need. As a general rule, keep 10% of the disk space unused.

If you are still not able to get your speed back, call Teltek! Our certified engineers can inspect your machine and figure out what is getting in the way of optimum performance.
