skydrive

Microsoft recently announced that its cloud service product, SkyDrive now has over 250 million users. For those of you not taking advantage of SkyDrive, here is what you’re missing out on.

SkyDrive is a tool for hosting documents, photos and more and it allows you to sync your files across multiple devices. You can share the documents you choose and set the rest to remain private. SkyDrive is free if you sign up for 7GB of storage; more space is available for a fee.

The product, which has been around for over five years, has become very popular in the last few months following the debut of Windows 8 in October of 2012. A short while after that, Microsoft made SkyDrive the default save location for the new Office, updated the SkyDrive app for iOS, and improved its uploading performance. Other upgrades include two-step verification and Extended Validation Certificates. Outlook.com just announced that they are offering a new feature that allows you to insert SkyDrive files directly into an email message.

SkyDrive comes with free versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. It also works well with other apps including EasyBib, HelloFax, IFTTT , OneNote, DocuSign Ink and PDF Expert for iPad.

Upgrade Windows XP And Other Microsoft Programs Before Support Ends In 2014

Tuesday, April 16th, 2013

You have a full year to prepare for this, but Microsoft support of Windows XP SP3 and other programs ends April 8, 2014. After this date, no new patches or bug fixes will be issued.

Windows XP isn’t the only Microsoft product that will cease to be maintained. Internet Explorer 6 on XP, Office 2003, Exchange Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2 are also on the list of programs with support ending

According to Microsoft’s web site, there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates following the deadline. Since the average enterprise deployment can take 18 to 32 months, it would be best to begin the upgrade process ASAP.

Some companies are planning to continue using these programs after 2014. While the reasons for upgrading clearly outweigh the reasons not to, the expense and learning curve could prevent widespread stoppage of program usage.

A year from now, help will be hard to find no matter where you look. When Microsoft drops support, so will outside vendors, so users will be left high and dry in the event questions or problems arise.

Users who continue to utilize this software will be more susceptible to hackers, who will have plenty of time to find vulnerabilities in the programs and exploit them. With no upgrades or patches in sight, they will have free reign to wreak havoc. If you plan to continue usage, it would be wise to make sure you have all the proper intrusion protection measures in place to protect yourself.

If you are currently using any of these programs, call Teltek IT today! The sooner we can consult with you, the better off your company will be. We will evaluate your business practices and equipment, identify any vulnerabilities in your system and find a solution.

Should you choose to deploy a new program, we will guide you through that process and make it as easy for you and your employees as possible. As a Microsoft Certified Partner, Teltek has the knowledge and resources to keep your computer network and IT infrastructure current and functioning efficiently with the personalized service Teltek clients have grown to admire.

Ask The Teltek Tekspert – How Do We Go Paperless?

Tuesday, January 15th, 2013

Nathan in National Harbor, MD asks:

Management has declared that our company needs to go paperless in 2013. What tools are out there to assist us with this goal?

A paperless office is an accomplishment that has many benefits. It’s cleaner, greener and more cost effective method of doing business. Since we have already implemented many procedures at Teltek to reduce our own paper usage, we are happy to share what works.

Here are a few tips on going paperless:

*pay employees via direct deposit instead of issuing printed checks

*save some postage by sending invoices and statements electronically and ask your vendors to do the same

*discourage employees from printing emails unless absolutely necessary

*upgrade to a CRM system that holds all the information that would typically be organized in paper file folders

*scan documents instead of making paper copies of them

*lose the fax machine and send/receive faxes electronically

How can Teltek help you accomplish this?

1. Let us install a fax server in your office: this will allow you to send and receive faxes electronically. Outbound faxes can be sent by web client or through Microsoft Office applications. Inbound faxes are converted to PDF or TIFF files and delivered to a recipient’s in-box or a network folder.

2. Utilize our data center for storage of your sensitive information. Instead of maintaining rows of filing cabinets stuffed with paper, let our secure servers hold all of it! We have a 71,000 square foot Tier III data center near Washington, DC that offers enterprise-class security, disaster recovery, storage and managed hosting services.

3. Give online collaboration a try: Microsoft’s SkyDrive and OneNote products allow team members to share, edit and discuss documents online

4. Take notes on a Tablet PC instead of using a legal pad: You can write notes on it as you go and record meetings for later playback alongside your notes. With a tablet and Microsoft OneNote, you won’t need a three ring binder ever again! Since Teltek is a Microsoft Certified Partner and Dell Registered Partner, we can set you up with the hardware and software needed to leave the paper trail behind!

As a one stop shop for all of your IT and telecom service and equipment needs, we are here to consult with you and find the best solution to ensuring your office is more efficient in 2013. Call Teltek IT today!

A Noteworthy Product: Microsoft OneNote 2013

Friday, January 11th, 2013

OneNote is a digital notebook for creating and storing all your notes, links, webpages, sketches and media—all in one place! The product has been around since 2003 and there are a few exciting new features in the 2013 edition.

Information in Microsoft OneNote is saved in Pages, which are organized into Sections within Notebooks. OneNote’s interface is an electronic version of a binder that is organized by colored tabs, so you can easily find what you need by subject.  OneNote notebooks are designed for collecting, organizing, and sharing information gathered from various users and sources.

This very cool tool promotes multi-user collaboration by gathering users’ notes (handwritten or typed), drawings, audio commentaries, etc. and storing them in the cloud so everyone has access at all times. Notes are automatically saved as soon as they are entered and they are searchable. You can use OneNote Mobile apps on Windows Phone, iOS and Android phones.

OneNote syncs with SkyDrive and SharePoint, so you can send your fellow collaborators a link to the file and be assured that everyone is viewing the most current version of your document.

Images, maps, documents, videos, Excel spreadsheets and more can be imbedded into your notes to drive the point home. With one click, you can convert tables in your notes into embedded Excel spreadsheets.

A feature called Inking  allows users to draw, erase, and edit with a finger, stylus or mouse. You can tap to choose a pen color, then swipe pick the shade you want, tap to change text size and swipe to pick how large you make it. If you’d rather write than type, OneNote can convert your handwriting into text.

OneNote’s Clipping Tool lets you take screen clippings (a cropped screenshot) and imbed them into any notebook in OneNote.

Outlook meeting integration. You can connect notes to Outlook meetings through Outlook, which will create a link to the OneNote-based notes for that meeting. Then, in OneNote, you’ll see a header related to the Outlook meeting in those notes.

A New Office For The New Year, Microsoft Office 2013

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Fans of Microsoft Office are anxiously awaiting the release of Office 2013, which will hopefully arrive early in the year. Microsoft is equally anxious for users to get ahold of it, so for a limited time, you can get it for no charge!

If you purchase Office 2010 or Office 2011 between October 19, 2012, and April 30, 2013, you are eligible for the Microsoft Office Pre-Launch Offer.

After you install and activate Office, send an e-mail to Microsoft and they will alert you when Office 2013 is available and at that time you will be able to download and install Office 2013 for free. You have until May 31, 2013 to redeem the offer.

Office 2013 improvements include changes to the User interface and support for touch-based Windows 8 tablets. Touch features will permit swiping, pinch and zoom to read documents and the ability to write with a finger or stylus. If you write an email by hand, Office 2013 automatically converts it to text.

Office On Demand allows users access to a full version of Office from anywhere by streaming a full-featured Office application to any internet-connected PC running Windows 7 and Windows 8. Through SkyDrive, the user has access to all of their documents.

Composing and reading Word documents in the 2013 version will be much easier. Word’s new onscreen Read Mode reflows text automatically in columns to fit a particular device screen and the pinch-to-zoom option is helpful as well. PDFs can now be edited without losing the formatting.

A new alignment guide assists with accurate placement of charts, photos, and diagrams within the text. The live layout tool also lets you preview how images will appear in documents as you drag them through various pages. Adding video to a document is possible as well. Online video is now supported in Word 2013, so content that has been embedded into a document is playable within it as long as an internet connection is present. You can add video from Bing Video, YouTube, or via a video embed code.

Excel has also been amped up with new features. The Flash Fill option will reformat and rearrange data automatically based on pattern recognition within your data.

A new Quick Trend feature will provide a chart that analyzes historical time series data, and a new Excel Add-in scans spreadsheets for errors, broken links, and inconsistencies.

The enhanced Presenter View in Power Point makes it easier to zoom in on a diagram, chart or other detail that you want to emphasize to your audience. Social Media junkies will appreciate that images from Facebook, Flickr, and other services can be inserted directly into the program without having to save them first. You can also import pictures through SkyDrive, SharePoint and Office Clip Art.

A great improvement to Outlook is Exchange ActiveSync support which allows Contacts, Mail, and Calendar appointments to be synced in Outlook without the need for a full Exchange server. A new Peeks feature lets you take a look at your schedule or a specific appointment with a contact without switching views. there’s also a MailTips feature that shows you if someone is available to receive your email or if you mentioned an attachment in your email but forgot to actually attach it.

In summary, Microsoft Office 2013 has many exciting new features to enhance your company’s productivity. Monday, November 19th, 2012

As some of you may have discovered, Windows 8 Pro does not include software for playing movies via DVD or Blu Ray. Also MIA is the ability to watch and record live TV.

Microsoft said that Windows Media Center was removed because there didn’t seem to be many users who were taking advantage of it. However, the Home Theater PC tribe has spoken and now Microsoft is providing it free of charge to some users.

For a limited time, Microsoft is allowing a free download and install of Windows 8 Media Center Pack and that is valued at $70!

Go to this page:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs

Then enter your email address and they will send you a key to install it.  The site claims that your product key will be emailed to you within 24 hours. Once you have your key, instructions to install the software are on the site where you enter your email address.

This offer ends in January, so please act quickly to take advantage of this free software. Even if you do not have Windows 8 or plan on upgrading to it in the immediate future, you should still get yourself a key while you can. You will receive one key per email address.

What Will We See In Windows 8?

Thursday, July 19th, 2012

The latest update of Windows will be released to manufacturers in August and available to consumers by October. What’s new for Version 8? Here are a few highlights:

Fresh: The new Start screen, otherwise known as Metro Start (check out the screenshot above), consolidates all of your important information in one place, such as your contacts, local weather and your next appointment. Colorful tiles update social media and news feeds in real time to keep you current on what’s happening

Flexible: Unlike previous versions, 8 is designed to work as well for tablet use as on desktop operating systems

Cloudy: It’s cloud based, so you can log into your Microsoft account from any PC anywhere and have access to your personalized desktop, apps and tools

Green: This new version is energy efficient too! Lower power requirements permit you to work longer on less battery power

Charming: A “Charms Bar” has replaced the Start button and provides quick access through icons to devices, search, settings and share functions.

Roomy: A new feature called Storage Spaces gives you the power to combine multiple hard drives and access data across them. The collection of drives will show up on your Windows 8 system as a single drive

Friendly: Apps like Socialite and Tweet@rama allow you to interface directly with Facebook and Twitter

Several executive and administrative members of Team Teltek recently achieved CompTIA A+ Certification! These dedicated Teltekians trained for 80+ hours over an 11 week period and had to pass two different exams to receive the certification.

This is an outstanding achievement since these are not our technicians, who currently hold A+ and other technical certificates, but our executive and office support co-workers!
