Is Anything Missing From Your Windows 8?

Monday, November 19th, 2012

As some of you may have discovered, Windows 8 Pro does not include software for playing movies via DVD or Blu Ray. Also MIA is the ability to watch and record live TV.

Microsoft said that Windows Media Center was removed because there didn’t seem to be many users who were taking advantage of it. However, the Home Theater PC tribe has spoken and now Microsoft is providing it free of charge to some users.

For a limited time, Microsoft is allowing a free download and install of Windows 8 Media Center Pack and that is valued at $70!

Go to this page:  http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/feature-packs

Then enter your email address and they will send you a key to install it.  The site claims that your product key will be emailed to you within 24 hours. Once you have your key, instructions to install the software are on the site where you enter your email address.

This offer ends in January, so please act quickly to take advantage of this free software. Even if you do not have Windows 8 or plan on upgrading to it in the immediate future, you should still get yourself a key while you can. You will receive one key per email address.

Please call us you have have questions about Windows 8 or need assistance with installation and training.

Ask The Teltek Tekspert – How Do I Send A Confidential Email?

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

Sue from Gettysburg, PA asks:

I need to email my social security number to my insurance company, but I’m hesitant to send sensitive information into cyberspace. Is there a secure way to email this to them?

It’s very smart of you to question the action of emailing information that could leave you vulnerable to hacking or identity theft. There is a great service called OneShar.es that can provide you with a solution to your situation.

OneShar.es is a free online service that allows you to create a secure message for one recipient and it even has a self-destruct feature for all you Mission Impossible fans out there!

Simply go to their website, https://oneshar.es/, click the blue “Create One Now” button and type your message in the box, you have up to 1000 characters to use. Then click the blue “Create Link” button. The service will encrypt the message and provide you with a unique URL that you can share with the recipient by copying and pasting it into an email.

Since the content of your message is encrypted immediately and stored encrypted,  no one other than your intended recipient, including OneShar.es, is able to read your information. After the recipient visits your private URL, the information is unlocked for them only and the message is deleted. If you try to access the URL a second time, you will receive the following error message:

Sorry :( That URL has already been retrieved and it’s no longer available

How cool is that?

You can even select the amount of time you want the message to be available to the receiver before it self-destructs, there are options ranging from 30 minutes to 3 days until…boom! No more message…

OneShar.es is able to maintain this level of security by using HTTPS (SSL; Port 443) to encrypt the data from your web browser to their servers. The data is stored encrypted and the message is deleted from their system after it is viewed.

Atos Gets The Gold For IT Support of London Olympics

Friday, August 17th, 2012

Atos should be commended for a job well done. Given the Herculean task of supporting all forms of IT for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London, Atos and their partners at the Technology Operations Centre pulled it off with flying colors!

Working with LOCOG and other partners, Atos accomplished the following:

*Configured and distributed more than 10,000 computers, servers and network and security devices to more than 90 Olympic venues across Great Britain

*Managed and secured the IT operations at the London 2012 Technology Operations Centre

*Provided the London 2012 Accreditation System, which assigned the correct access privileges and controls to 250,000 people, including athletes, officials, guests and volunteers

*Delivered a unique Volunteer Portal that helped London 2012 recruit more than 70,000 volunteers

*Ensured that the media in London and around the globe received results in record time through Atos Information Diffusion Systems.

Atos will now prepare to support the IT for the Paralympic Games, which commence on August 29th and run for 11 days. The Olympic software will be removed from computers at the Technology Operations Center and replaced with the Paralympic software. Various systems will be updated to account for the different sports and disciplines.

Following that will be Sochi in 2014 and Rio in 2016.

London’s Olympic Games Will Be Hard To Hack, Says Atos

Wednesday, July 25th, 2012

Atos, the official IT services provider for the 2012 London Olympics has diligently prepared to deliver its “Personal Best” efforts to defend against the various cyber attacks that threaten all types of technology systems associated with the games that begin later this week. Atos is an international information technology services company with 74,000 employees in 48 countries.

Protecting the information and equipment at such an event is a massive effort; 3,500 IT professionals will be supporting 1,000 servers and 10,000 end user devices over 140 sites. Their base of operations is the Olympic Technology Operations Centre in east London’s Canary Wharf business district

Preparation for this monumental task began seven years ago and includes over 200,000 hours of testing and responding to simulated cyber attacks. The French IT services and consulting corporation enlisted various “ethical hackers” to try their best to get past the security measures in place for defensive practice. Other drills involved sending data collected from past Olympic games and other world championship events into the real-time data distribution system that will update the scoreboards at the events.

The scoring and timing systems at the Olympic stadium in east London is an ideal target for hackers with a need to express themselves. “Hacktivists” search for infiltration points that will allow them to replace athletes’ times and scores with the rhetoric they wish to display on this world stage.

At the 2008 Beijing Games, approximately 12 million potential cyber attacks were thwarted daily. Four years have provided hackers with time to hone their skills and cause epic chaos if they are successful. The London Organizing Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games’(LOCOG) invested $750 million in technology and defending it against threats.

It does not take an Olympic effort to defend your valuable information against hackers, just call Teltek!

Teltek is proud to offer IT services as the fourth component to our multi-systems approach as your single source technology services company. This Managed Service Provider (MSP) offering completes our longstanding goal to provide our clients with a one-call resource for all of their business technology needs. IT outsourcing, remote back up and disaster recovery, helpdesk support, computer network relocations, security products and server/desktop virtualization are just a few of the services available.

Which Tablet Would The IT Doctor Prescribe For You?

Tuesday, May 29th, 2012

Tablet computers are super-hot right now, but with all of the different models available, it can be difficult to decide which one is best for you. We have researched impartial reviews via the web on four different models and will provide some factoids on the following: Apple iPad 2Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, Toshiba Thrive and Amazon Kindle Touch.

Determining the best tablet starts with itemizing what kind of functionality you need your mobile device to have. Are you a teleworker? Gamer? Addicted to books and movies? We will help you find the slate of your dreams!

Shutterbugs and Movie Buffs will get the best eye candy from the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 which allows users to transfer media files from PC to tablet directly and faster than other models. The crisp 1200 x 800 pixel touchscreen display is another advantage this tablet has over the others when it comes to viewing media. This tablet has front and rear cameras that can be utilized for snapshots and video.

Bookworms will find the Amazon Kindle Touch 3G to be a real page-turner! This e-reader has been widely praised for its compact, lightweight design, speed and easy navigation. This device features a  6″ e-ink, glare-free display and enough memory to store up to 3,500 books! Users can select reading material from the Amazon catalog of more than 1 million books, magazines and newspapers.

For mobile workers, the Toshiba Thrive has been rated as a top contender. There are 8, 16, and 32GB models available and it has a full-size USB, keyboard and mouse, as well as the ability to share media easily. Its full-sized ports and replaceable parts make it easy to maintain and service by the user’s IT department. A full SD card slot and replaceable battery are other desirable feature, however its design is bulkier than most. it’s not much heavier than other tablets, just thicker.

The iPad 2 is the clear winner in the gaming category offering a wide selection of games and the best ability to process frames per second. In a gaming test conducted by PC World, the iPad 2 produced 52 fps. However, the iPad 2 does not have a USB port, so that limits its ability to support a controller of some kind.

Purchasing any kind of electronic device requires research and planning to find your ideal match. Hopefully this article will give you some sense of which direction to take!

For advice on how to integrate a tablet into your office environment, call Teltek today! Teltek has the knowledge and resources to keep your computer network and IT infrastructure current and functioning efficiently with the personalized service Teltek clients have grown to admire. Teltek’s new IT Service offerings are part of the package we like to call Total Care Assurance. We thought it would be helpful to define what it means to Teltek so there’s no ambiguity about it.

Total Care Assurance is one-stop technology support for the systems your office relies upon to stay in contact with co-workers, clients and your strategic partners. It’s a multi-system approach that includes your phone systemcabling, voice & data carriers, network support, disaster recovery, etc.

This graphic displayed on our Total Care Assurance page sums it up best:

Our process begins with an in-depth analysis of your existing technology, future business plans and budget. Finally, all systems and software are upgraded to a manageable level and your ongoing support begins.

A Fast Read On Quick Response Codes

Wednesday, February 15th, 2012

QR Codes, those mysterious little blocks that remind me of a crossword puzzle background, are showing up everywhere lately. What are they doing here and what do they want?

The Quick Response code was designed by Denso Wave in 1994 to track vehicles for Toyota during the manufacturing process. It’s actually an evolution of the bar code.

Also known as a two-dimensional (2D) code, these black and white squares have been widely used in Japan for the past decade. What makes it special is the fact that it can hold thousands more characters than a 1D bar code, which is limited to 20. The more information you ask a 2D code to store, the smaller the pixels will be. A QR Code can be scanned vertically or horizontally, unlike a standard UPC code.

When you scan a code, you are linked to information in the form of a text, phone number, web site, etc. To enable scanning, you must first install a QR Scanner app on your smartphone. You can find this by searching for “QR Scanner” and your model of smartphone in your browser. If your phone has a built-in camera, there should be a QR app available. YouTube has videos posted for how to scan and use QR Codes if you’d like to see a demonstration.

Enabling a QR Code is relatively easy and free of charge. You enter your information into a QR Code generator, found on many web sites and the code is created instantly. The QR Code at the top of this page was created by me in seconds on qrcode.kaywa.com. Many airlines are using these codes as a superfast boarding pass and I’m starting to see these on the back of business cards as well.

There is a downside to utilizing QR codes. Malicious QR codes can contain viruses and attack codes that could lead to a compromise of the information on your phone or computer, so you should only scan a code it if it links to a company or site you trust.

Speaking of companies you trust, Trust Teltek to assist with all of your technology needs.
